If you go about your job search without an aim or objective in mind, you are wasting your time. You have no goal or end in mind. How then do you know where you heading to and when you have reached it? Life is like a journey. Know where you are now and figure out where you want to be, by when and for what purpose. For example, you might be a young adult with a first degree and in your twenties now. You want to a department manager in 3 years’ time in a fortune 500 firm. So that you can fulfill your desire to run a department, pay your house mortgage and go on your dream vacation.

As a start, you must be clear what you want to do.

4 broad criteria to help you decide

1) What are you passion about?

Passion is a strong feeling towards or belief in something. When you are enthusiastic about something, you will pursue it with great drive and energy. Spend some time to find out what excite you and decide which vocation you should embark on.

2) What match your skills and competent?

Everyone is different not only in term of appearance but also skills and competent. Some are good at connecting with people; some are capable of coaching people to perform, while others are good with figures and can analyze trends. Assess your own skills and competent. What are you good at?

3) Is it economically feasible?

You have to examine your financial commitments. Do you need the pay cheque for yourself or do you have a partner and even children to provide for? What about a house mortgage, a car loan or even children’s overseas education? In retrospect, you might consider what financial commitments are really essential and what can be put on hold for the time being. Finally, you should be able to have a clearer picture of the amount of money you need to earn and for what purposes.

4) Is it socially viable?

Different societies have different perceptions of different vocations. Are you in a conservative environment where working as a dancer in certain dress code is frowned upon? Or working as a street performer is not considered as a real job? Think through your options and consider them carefully.

You should take time to think through what you want, like and would do for a living. Going to work should not be equaled to a hamster caged in and on the wheel whole day. It should be meaningful to you and give you personal satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment.

It is good practice to maintain contact with a few reputable headhunters throughout your career. An occasional phone call to chat or to inform them of your advancement in career and openness to new opportunities should be sufficient. You can consider attending their function such as networking or industrial talk if you are invited but avoid over exposing yourself. You would not want to be seen as an employee who is too eager to move on.

Though headhunter is a good mean to connect you with the right employers, do not rely totally on them to find new opportunities for you. You should take a proactive role and drive your own career forward. It is easy to say “yes” but harder to say “no” to the headhunter. When you need to turn down an offer received via headhunter, do it professionally and tactfully. Remember it’s your career, you should know what suit you best. But don’t burn bridges.
