If you are like most employees, then you appreciate the opportunity to turn your ordinary 9 to 5 job into something that you relish going to every day. This is not the case for most employees because many of them do the same drab, boring things every day. They are not challenged or fulfilled. For this reason, many employees end up leaving their jobs, going on extended vacations and getting fired. If you do not want this to happen to you, here are some suggestions to help you improve your work performance.
Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
1. Find out exactly what you want out of a job before you work there. If you want a fast paced, multi-tasking, highly competitive position that requires quick thinking and problem-solving, and the job you are working at does not provide any of these challenges, then you need to find another job or improve your current job outlook. This means that you need leave your desk, join your co-workers in light hearted banter, get involved in different employee projects and acquire different skills. All of these tasks are possible provided that you believe that staying at your current job is worth it.
2. Office politics is often confused with other forms of office policy that many employees dread being a part of. However, this is often part and parcel of office work. Your work performance then is only as good as the person you are trying to impress. If you are trying to move to another office or move to another department (or even move up the ladder), you must choose who is more appropriate to impress. You do this by observing your environment, the employees you work around, the projects offered, who participated in the projects, the promotions given out and who received the promotions.
3. Attend a conference. Most working conferences are just venues where professionals go to share and compare their ideas, best practices and philosophies. Most of the time, these conferences are given either in state or out of state and involve attending a working banquet or opening session, daily workshops or working sessions, and a final day of reflection. Most of these center on a major theme where professionals either present papers, presentations or speeches.
4. Better credentials lead to a better job. Therefore, employees are expected to attend meetings and specialty courses to improve their work performance. Learning Tree is a perfect example of employee-based courses that will teach employees' computer applications, project management, computer programming, etc. Whatever these employees desire, this program offers it (see Resources below).
5. Because most offices have cubicles to create the idea of privacy and quiet, most employees may not realize that their spacing may be destroying their ability to perform well. The problem is being too quiet and having too much privacy alienates the office staff from one another, causing office cliques that often lead to irritating office showdowns. A good combination between open space and closed cubicle space allows the employees to maintain a business like and at the same time a spirited atmosphere.
