There are a number of ways to achieve the ultimate goal of keeping your staff and employees happy, and we look at a few of them below.
Good Wages / Salary - The most obvious way of keeping your staff on the ball and working hard is to make sure they are paid correctly. In a recession or a down time, it can be quite easy to immediately start cutting pay, but sometimes this can be counter productive as not only will their motivation fall, but so will their level of productivity, meaning you might end up losing more money than you are saving.
Job Security - Even though this can sometimes be very hard for any employer to guarantee, making sure the employee knows that their job is long term and will be around for some time is quite often the thing that keeps them happy. Nobody likes uncertainty, especially when you have bills to pay and families to look after, so it is vital they know how valued they are in terms of job security.
Company Involvement - When you keep your staff in the dark by not letting them know what is going on, it can be quite de-motivating, as they do not feel involved or happy that they are being kept up to date with what is happening within or at the business. Have weekly meetings and make sure you keep every member of the team involved with your business and its needs.
Rewards - Rewarding your staff does not mean having to give lavish gifts that will ruin the company's financial structure. Even the odd drink or meal out makes the difference, and if they achieve certain targets or really do something outside of the box, try to offer a small reward, just to make sure they know how appreciated they are.
Training And Improvement - The normal human being wants to strive for success and continually improve themselves. One of the things that many companies struggle with is how to improve the skills and abilities of their employees without running into massive training courses and qualifications. Even if you just train them to use a new machine or allow them to take over another responsibility, they will feel like they are learning new things and also feel that their self worth is also continuing to grow as well.
Team Building - When your staff spend all day, five days a week together, it can sometimes lead to internal issues and a few grips can start to appear. Taking them away for the day to do something different or taking them all out together can improve their bond, as people outside of the working environment are always much different to those within.
